How to hire a website copywriter in India.

Nine questions to ask before you pay anyone to rewrite your website, the red flags to watch for, and what you should get for your money.

The short answerHire the writer who asks more about your customers than about your word count. A good website copywriter should research your buyers, show you real before-and-after work, quote a fixed price in writing, and tell you how you’ll both judge whether the copy worked.

What a website copywriter actually does

A website copywriter writes the words on the pages that sell: the homepage, service pages and landing pages. The job is different from content writing, which produces articles and blogs, and from SEO writing, which is mainly about being found. A good website copywriter does the research first, then writes every line to move one kind of reader towards one action, such as an enquiry or a booking.

Nine questions to ask before you hire

  1. What will you need from me? Good answers mention customer emails, reviews, sales-call notes or a short call with you. Writers who only want your old website will rewrite your old mistakes.
  2. Can I see a before-and-after? Ask for the original page next to the rewrite and the reasoning behind the changes, not just a polished portfolio.
  3. How will you learn what my customers care about? Listen for interviews, review mining or questions about your best customers.
  4. Is the price fixed, and what does it include? You should know the number of pages, rounds of revision and the delivery date before any work starts.
  5. How many rounds of revisions are included? Two is common. Unlimited often means the brief was never clear.
  6. Who actually writes it? With freelancers and small studios, the person you talk to should be the person who writes.
  7. How will we know if it worked? A good writer names the action the page should produce, such as enquiries or bookings, and how to compare before and after.
  8. Will the copy work for Google too? The page should name what you sell and where, in plain words, with a sensible title and meta description.
  9. What happens if the first draft isn’t right? Look for a clear answer in writing, whether that is a revision process or a refund.

Red flags

  • Promises of guaranteed sales or rankings. Results also depend on your offer, price and traffic.
  • Per-word pricing for a sales page. The best page is often the shortest one.
  • No questions about your customers before quoting.
  • A portfolio of only blog posts when you need pages that sell.
  • Drafts that read like generic AI output: long, vague, and full of words any business could say.

What you should receive

  • A short summary of what your customers want and worry about.
  • The page structure: what goes where, and why.
  • Two or three headline options.
  • The full copy, including buttons, form labels and the text near the price.
  • A page title and meta description for search.

Questions

How long does a website rewrite take?

It depends on the number of pages and how quickly research and approvals happen. One page usually takes days rather than weeks; a full site takes longer. Ask for the delivery date in writing.

Do I still need a copywriter if I use AI?

AI is fast at drafts, but it starts from your prompt rather than from what your customers say, and it can’t judge which claims your business can honestly stand behind. That research and judgement is what you pay a copywriter for.

Does the copywriter need to know my industry?

It helps less than you think. A good copywriter learns your customers quickly through research; industry knowledge without customer research produces jargon.

Should I hire a freelancer or an agency?

A freelancer or small studio usually means the person you brief is the person who writes. An agency suits larger projects that also need design and development.
